Do all babies cry before going off to sleep???!!

Hi, my 6 wk old baby always cries for about half an hour before going to sleep - this can be during the day or at night. Does anyone else experience this with their lo? Any suggestions??

Probably obvious but have you checked that he/she isn't still hungry, has wind or is uncomfortable in any other way? My DD usually fed to sleep at that age and rarely woke after a feed. If she did I'd just pick her up and feed, wind etc until she was settled.

I don't think most people would leave their baby to cry for half an hour at this age, so wouldn't be able to answer.

Could be hungry or windy or just tired and needing a cuddle or to be rocked to sleep.

The OP didn't say she was 'leaving' the baby to cry, only that the baby was crying.

My ds once cried for about half an hour when very overwrought and overtired - I was doing controlled comforting at the time. Most of the time, he only cried for about 5 minutes... What do you do to get him/her ready for sleeping?

When ds was this sort of age he would cry for long periods of time, despite being winded, in a clean, dry nappy and being cuddled. Sometimes, he was most probably hungry, as I was breastfeeding and failing.

Other times he was tired and needed calming down before soothing to sleep (dh developed a very effective 'wobbling' technique that still works now). Other times he seemed to be'just crying'.

I was pacing the back of church yesterday morning with ds2, 5 months, who still thinks that the best solution to being tired is to cry some more. Seems some of them can't just go off to sleep without letting you know how tired they really are.

If I'm at home I leave him on his own if I'm sure he's crying for tiredness, and he'll usually settle pretty quickly now. But do note: he is older than your baby. For now it may just be a case of riding it out.

Sometimes my dd would have to noise to put herself to sleep, particulary i later realised if she was overtired. You could try to spot tiredness earlier and put her down quickly but honestly at this age can be hard as all they seem to do is eat and sleep, so just keep that in mind as she gets bigger.

Sometimes babies do cry, as long as you have checked all the obvious causes then its ok to give them a cuddle and wait for them to stop (you probably know this but i needed to be told before i was confident enough not to panic). As she grows and can make other noises she will, my dd currently fake coughs for attention from strangers and went through a screeching phase.

Dont leave her to cry it out alone, she is too little (although i appreciatwe you didnt suggesrt you were going too).

all of mine have, but I think half an hour is a bit long. I tended to go ina shush-pat if they were crying for more than ten mins.

6 weeks is still tiny (although it probably seems that your LO has been around ages! ) and sometimes they cry for a reason at this age, and sometimes you can't find one!! just cuddle and comfort, it will soon pass

DS2 did this up until 3, though not always.
There was a distinct sleep cry, typically when falling asleep somewhere outside his bed, where he was usually quiet.
