Early Waking

My ds is 3. Recently he has been waking at 4am. I have been trying to settle him back to sleep but he refuses to sleep so eventually I have either put a video on for him or put his light on low so he can play with his toys. What ever I do he ends up coming into my bedroom every 10 minutes for something..hug, kiss, drink, wee etc. Everytime he comes into my bedroom he wakes the baby. I usually try to keep him upstairs until 6.30 then I get up.

This morning was particularly bad, I came downstairs with him at 5.45 and he has been screaming and crying- "I want to go to sleep". I gave him a chance and let him upstairs into his bed. He got into bed and just cried loudly for 10 minutes so I have brought him back down again. He is still crying!

Help please, what can I do? He starts nursery on Friday and he won't be able to cope with it if he is up at 4 every day!
(He goes to bed at 7 and normally wakes once or twice in the night for a wee or a drink but goes back to sleep quite easily)

I resorted to controlled crying with dd but she got the hint. She was only 20 months though so yours might respond to a star chart maybe or one of those bunny alarm clocks that "wakes up" at a certain time.
