3 week olds sleep - too much? ?

I hope this doesn't sound stupid as I know he's still so tiny but if my 3 week old isn't breastfeeding, he's asleep! This is during the day. It's impossible to keep him awake. I've tried stimulating him with his stargaze play may, his bouncer, talking and singing to him etc but he just dozes even sitting up!
I'm noticing night times are becoming a little harder. He's waking up at 3 am and 6am for feeds however he's not going back to sleep easily
Am I letting him sleep too much in the day or is it impossible to instil any kind of pattern so early?

Totally normal :)

At that Age, default state is asleep. They basically wake if they need something (food, nappy etc) but otherwise they're asleep

Enjoy it. In a few months you'll be trying every trick in the book to get them to sleep!

They gradually sort out day and night but it takes a while. Keep daytime bright and nighttime dark and calm, and try to get outside in the daylight every day.

I wouldn't worry, but are you going out each day? Apparently the melatonin from the sun helps babies to learn the difference between day and night. Even though he'll be wrapped up, I still think it will help to get him into the light. You'll be amazed at how much more alert he'll become in the next few weeks.

They need like 20 hours of sleep a day or something crazy at that age. My second DC was the same but at six weeks she started sleeping a lot less so honestly make the most of it

Okay thanks for the reassurance I feel a lot better now.
I've barely been out as I'm on my own during the day and had him by emergency section. Then developed an internal and external infection so have been feeling a bit sore :(
I'll make the effort to start getting out more now though.

I had a complicated section - don't push yourself too hard. Move as much as you can but no more, if you see what I mean. Plenty of time to get out and about, for now just rest :)

Three/four weeks was the point I started to feel a bit better. I had a walk with the pram most days and that helped. I'm four months on now and I'm feeling miles better physically

They just constantly sleep. I know it sounds trite but enjoy it and use the time to recuperate.

However if you're concerned it's worth checking with HV in case of something easily rectifiable like jaundice maybe
