For how long was your baby always in the room with you?

Ds is 2 months. He stays downstairs sleeping with us (on us) until we go to bed then sleeps in our room. I am a bit paranoid about him not being with us due to a friends' SIDS experience and also my dd choking on mucus as a baby (she was ok). But what I can't remember is when did I put my older two kids to bed in their own rooms at normal bedtime.

Mine were between 5-7 months when I started leaving them more, they slept in their Moses baskets in the living room with us in the evening and we took them up with us when we went to bed. I just couldn't risk it earlier.

I think Ds was realistically about a year, but that's becAuse I was a lone parent and we co slept, so he was always kinda with me. I was super paranoid and could never switch off when he was alone, so it sort of defeated the object a bit. He's 3.5 now and still sleeps in with me most nights, but he does go up at 6 by himself now

I did the full 6 months with my DD at night. But from 3 months my HV said it was okay to leave her in her bedroom alone during naps so I did.

SIDs recommendations recommend 6 months.

I have always had baby's cot in my room until about 9 months old. But from 5-6 months ish I have started putting baby 'to bed' upstairs before I go to bed and daytime naps would begin to move upstairs.

I can tell you exactly because it was fireworks week and DS kept wakening up! So we moved him into his own room at exactly 4 months. I had really wanted to keep him beside us till 6 months, but the fireworks broke us and it was amazing the difference moving rooms made.

I leave my 5.5 monthe old asleep alin for 20-30 minutes now, And while i potter about in the evenings, and will move him him into his own room at 6 months.
Because SIDS is rare lots of people who put babies in a separate room will be fine, but for those few who arent, well words can't describe how awful it is.
SIDS guidelines say 6 months for all sleep, including naps. HVs shouldn't be saying naps alone are OK at 3 months, that's just wrong.
Keep him in the same room as you

At the risk of being flamed here, my baby girl has had naps alone from about 9 weeks old. I thought the advice was to have them in your room at night with you...it does make sense that it's for ALL sleeps though. She has been fine anyway.

Out of interest, how does being in the same room prevent SIDS? Because you'll hear if they're struggling?

No, OneWord, it's because the sound of an adult breathing helps them to regulate their own.

We waited until she was 6 months. We then started a proper bedtime as soon as she went in her own cot.

Seven months. It would have been six but there was a delay with her nursery furniture arriving.

Own room at 4 months for both of ours, lefty them both to nap on their own from 3 months.

Lots of people do this, but it's not the what the medical advice is, I suspect this is another example of a HV making stuff up.

With DS we didn't understand about the need for them to be near you to regulate breathing, so we kept him in the moses basket if he napped in the day, but put him in his crib in our room when he fell asleep at night.

By the time we had DD I'd spent enough time on mumsnet to get it and so DD slept on me or in a moses basket in the evenings and I took her up to bed when we went.

I can't remember how long we did that for (sorry!) but it was over the 6 month mark.

At about 4 months we started putting them up to the bedroom in the evening as we were disturbing them if they were downstairs. We used a video monitor and it was only for around 2 hours until we went to bed.

Still in a cot in my room now at 5 months.

OneWord - with SIDS you won't hear them struggling, its silent. They just die. SIDS isn't suffocation or breathing difficulties. A SIDs verdict is given when the post mortem can find no reason for death. So even if you have a breathing monitor you won't hear them getting into difficulties, because there is no warning.

Ours never slept in our bedroom. I appreciate that's unusual but it's what we decided to do.

Both DD1 and DD2 were never left alone to sleep until 26 weeks.

We put dd in her bednest to sleep at night around 8 weeks. Being downstairs disturbed her so much.now she's sound asleep by 7ish & sleeps peacefully. I go up and join her in the room for the night about an hr or so later. We have a video monitor too. She's going into her own room after her 16 week vaccinations.thats if she still fits in the bednest until then 😳

About 15 months for DS2 but only because the only way the wee horror slept was on me and if I moved he would wake up. DS1 went into his own room like a dream at 6 months.
