20 month old up for several hours

My DS is 20mo. After some bedtime sleep training he sleeps through most of the time. However, if he does wake at night he's awake for several hours - the older he gets, the longer it is, and now it's up to 3 hours. Dh or I just sit by his cot in the dark trying to ignore him while he chats to us, as he'll scream the place down if we leave. Every time it happens for more than a night or two in a row, DH and I talk ourselves into sleep training when he wakes, but then he'll sleep through again so we don't. Anybody got any tips for helping him to fall back asleep on his own more quickly? Or a similar child who just grew out of it?
