Bedtime routine for an 18 mo

I watched The 3 Day Nanny last night and she recommended a more grown up bedtime routine for these 22mo twins. She suggested a more lively story time on a beanbag in their room, no milk, a goodnight phrase and kiss then into their cots and straight out of the room.
I'd never considered before how babyish my DS's routine is as we've never changed it and l'm now thinking we should move it on a bit.
At the moment, we both sit on a chest and he lays right back with a pillow and my arm supporting him. He drinks his warm milk from a sippy cup (he has an open cup for meals and a free flow straw cup for through the day) whilst I read him a story very calmly and quietly. Then goodnight phrase, kiss, in cot and out the room.
So ideas on changes please to make it more age appropriate...
What do you do?
Do you still give milk?
What kind of cup?
Where do you have story time?
Thank you!
