Sleeping on front

My DS for 6 months went to sleep on his front (and slept very badly for 5 months of those). He settled fine for a month and then was a waking and screaming a lot! We tried everything until my DH went to see him... after an hour i wondered why it had all gone quiet and my DH had lay on the bed with DS on top (face down) and was too scared to get up in case he cried. I carefully picked him and lay him face up and he woke screaming and crying until i turned him back over.
Since then we have put him to bed on his front and he's slept very well, even when he turns over in the night he is still ok.

Where does everyone stand on putting them to sleep on their front?

iirc it's ok once they can roll over for themselves I think

Dd slept on her front from about 9 days, for the same reason. She would NOT sleep on her back for more than 15 minutes and if we tried turning her over once she was asleep she woke up instantly. We decided as that was the only risk factor for SIDS that she had we would let her do it.

DD started rolling on to her front to sleep at 4 months old. I spoke to my hv who said that as they could roll not to worry to much about it. I guess at 6 months hes quite active anyway and will be able to roll both ways if needed.

I used to put my DD on her side to sleep with one of those sleep positioners to stop her rolling onto her front. At 4 weeks she just rolled onto her front anyway. I used to put her back on her side but she would always end up on her front. She was strong enough to roll and like others have said, I think that is what is important.
