6 month old 'talking' for 2 hours at 3 am

Just wondering if anyone has any experience of this - my 2nd DS has always been a pretty good sleeper ( unlike my first!) but the last two weeks has started waking at 3 am and babbling on for up to two hours! He strangely doesn't cry and does eventually go back to sleep most nights but I don't. Also he is obviously then quite tired during the day.

He usually naps pretty well most of the time (2 1 hour +). Has jut started weaning the last two weeks and sleeping on his tummy so was wondering if it might be that?

Any-one else experienced it? Do they just grow out of it?

Two hour awake in the night, whether crying or not, really isn't ideal. Do you feed him at this wake up? I might giving a bottle a try to get him back to sleep.

Yes I agree - I tried feeding him but he isn't interested at all. Just bobs around in his cot, babbling away and looking around ( even though it's dark) so nothing can really resettle him. I asked a friend who is a sleep consultant and she said they don't 'train' babies that do this as there isn't really anything they are doing that can be sorted. As I say he has started trying to crawl, rolling about and babbling all day the last two weeks so I'm wondering if it is a development thing possibly.

He is a very, happy, chilled out boy so isn't grumpy when tired in the day but I do think it would be better for him to sleep ( plus he wakes me too).

My dd does this quite often too. Its always about 3 or 4 am and she is perfectly content just rolling around and making babbling singing sounds. I just leave her to it and hope she doesn't roll about too much and get stuck. She moved into her own room about 3 weeks ago and we started weaning just before so her sleep has been all over the place. Always seems like she's just not tired anymore but she doesn't want me, just happy to amuse herself. She nearly always drifts off, normally in a silly position (on her side arms and legs a kimbo!)with her arm wrapped around her teddy. If she wants me she yells. I'm hoping it stops though because I can never get back to sleep knowing she's wide awake!

Thanks superb - sounds exactly like my DS, including the weaning and ending up in silly positions when he drifts off. At least they are happy and let's hope it passes!

Thanks for responding - it is useful to know other little ones are also soon this ( my first DC screamed when he woke so contented babbling is a new one for me).

My DD did this around the time of her first birthday and it turned out she was getting her first tooth. She was perfectly happy so apart from popping in to shush her (and check she was ok) we would generally leave her to it. It was short lived and she went back to seeping through once the tooth was out. Hope it's just a phase for your little one.

DD has been doing this on and off for about 6 weeks now, she is 7 1/2 months. I keep hoping it is a short lived phase but it happens every few nights. Sorry, no help but just to say you aren't alone. I imagine it is another phase.

My dd1 (who is 8 now) used to do something like this. She wasn't as young as 6 months more like 13/ 14months and sued to start singing "Bob the Builder2 at about 2/3am most nights. We just left her to it and she always settled back to sleep but it didn't seem to effect her she wasn't overtired during the day. She is also still the one that I hear most nights getting up for loo in the middle of the night.
As others have said there isn't much you can do just let them get on with it and invest in a good pair of ear plugs!

Mine (now almost 4) has done this periodically during her life at various ages! When she was really little she would babble and 'sing', and then when she got older she would talk to her friends from nursery (who obviously were not there). After ascertaining there was nothing wrong I used to just turn the monitor off and go back to sleep, there was nothing much I could do about it!

He is still doing it every couple of nights, just happily chatting away. At least it seems he is quite happy in his cot and room I guess! It's good to know he isn't the only one ( he is a very chatty baby generally).
