Night time separation anxiety

Hi all

My 8.5 month old DS has been sleeping through the night since he was about 3 months. He'd also until recently been taking his naps in his cot without too much fuss.

But for the last two weeks he has been waking up a lot. As soon as I or DH pick him up he will fall asleep on our shoulder, but lower him into his cot and the inconsolable screaming begins. Same at naptimes. It's got even worse for the last few days and last night he was up at 8.30pm (after going to bed at 7pm), then between 11-1pm when he just wouldn't go into his cot. We ended up bringing him into our bed where he went to sleep in an instant for the rest of the night.

Does this sound like separation anxiety? What can I do to help? Giving him my pyjama top so he has my scent doesn't work, shushing him, stroking his head, singing, nothing works except a cuddle!

He's fine during the day - he can be left with grandparents and me leaving him for a few mins to go to the toilet/make a cuppa.

I don't want to get him used to coming in our bed!

Any advice? How long does this phase last?

Thanks! (Sorry for the essay!)

I'd co-sleep, just to get some rest! Grin
