How long should 14mo nap for?

just wondering how long your 14month olds nap for? My dd takes one nap a day and I now wake her at 2hours. She would sleep for over 3hours otherwise.
I've just posted about her not sleeping very well at the moment and I wonder if the nap length could be to do with it? too long/short?

I also do a 2 hour nap [waking at 2 hours] anytime between 12 and 3

I was told by a sleep consultant that they are tired and ready for bed from 4hours after to a max of 5 hours after their nap.

So I make sure that DC goes to bed 4 hours or so after they got up from their nap - anytime between 6.30 and 7. Since doing this DC is sleeping better - nearly had 12 hours the other day.

My 15 month barely sleeps during the day. We are lucky if she has 2 hours over the day and that's either 1 or 2 naps. Today she's only had 30 minutes all day and I think we have an over tiredness issue on our hands. I think between 2 and 3 hours through the day and 11 hours at night is about the average that I've read somewhere. So I don't think it should be affecting night sleep. What time is her nap in relation to morning wake time and bedtime?

That's interesting KatieNanna I wake my dd at about 1pm and she tells us she wants to go to bed at about 7pm, so that's longer than the 4-5hours Confused

Deduct37 She wakes about 0645 and goes for her nap at 11am. She's started waking again in the night and will only settle with some milk so I'm just wracking my brains to see if it's something I have done and can change...

If she is going to bed overtired this will have a knock on effect on her sleep and may case disruptive sleep.

I would push her nap back to 12 - so 12-2 then bed at 6.30 for a few days and see if that helps

Thanks KatieNanna will try pushing her nap back slowly..any other tips from the sleep consultant?! :-)

DD does about 2hrs. Sometimes slightly less but rarely more. She does 11:30 to 1:30, bed at 7:30 (same bedtime since she was 4 months, won't sleep earlier unless extremely tired).

We changed to one long nap last month, rather than two shorter ones. She's still horrific at night Sad

Mine sleeps 8-7 overnight and has done since he was 8 months (he's 14 months now)

He usually sleeps 2 hours in the day which means he's awake for a total of 11 hours, split into morning/afternoon so he has to go longer than 4 hours awake as he's had the sleep he wants. I'd love him to sleep 12 hours at night but he just doesn't, not all babies do, in fact I'd say it was rare.

Littlef00t · 16/05/2015 14:14

Dd sleeps for 2-2.5 hours in the day and 11-11.5 at night. mostly 1 lunchtime nap, sometimes long morning and late catnap.

FATEdestiny · 16/05/2015 19:16

It's a long time since I had a 14 month old, but I wouldn't wake baby from the lunchtime nap unless (a) I had to for practical reasons, ie going out, or (b) Toddler was still asleep by 4pm.

I would consider 90 minute too short, 3 hours would be longer than normal (and I would indicate child didn't sleep well the night before) but not unheard of. Usual would be 2 to 2 1/2 hours lunchtime nap.

Interesting replies, thanks.

FATEdestiny I agree with what you say and waking her from her nap has never sat well with me, 1-I feel mean, and 2- I assume if she's still asleep then she needs it. She's always been a girl who likes her sleep e.g. last night she went to bed at 7.30pm slept all through until 0630am had a little bit of milk and then woke up at 0820am and still had a good day nap and had to be woken at 2 hours and went to bed tired but happy and mellow at 1930hrs tonight..I will wait and see what the night holds!

I wonder if I should start letting her sleep on?

If I let her sleep longer for her nap then I would imagine that I would have to put her bedtime back too.

I'm trying to push her nap back to 12ish but not quite there yet.

Everything changes so often with a baby/toddler, it's hard to keep up!

2/3 hours is probably about right at that age. I'd leave her to sleep and see how bedtime goes. They really need sleep to help developmentally, the more the better. My almost 4 year old can still do a 2 hour nap and 11 hours at night....
