Un-swaddling

We've swaddled DS since birth. He's now 3 months and I thought I'd try him out in sleeping bags now that he's out of his Moses basket. Complete disaster! He waves his hands about and wakes himself up. Anyone been through this? Is it too early to unswaddle or should I persevere with sleeping bags and hope that he suddenly gets the idea?

If baby likes the swaddle, no reason to un-swaddle until he is rolling (and even then many mothers continue, against formal advise).

I spent some time swaddling my DD over the top of her sleeping bag, to allow for transition. I also sometimes go back to the swaddle (6 1/2 months now) from time to time if she is over tired. Somewhere around 4 months babies often 'find their hands' and start clawing at their face and chewing hands at this point. I found the swaddle useful to get through this.

We've just unswaddled after just over 5 months. First couple of nights were awful but quickly got better.
