Is there such thing as too much sleep?

I never EVER thought I would write a thread like this but I really have no idea how my DS is sleeping so much! He is 12 weeks old on Monday.
I generally have him bathed, fed and in his cot by 7pm but sometimes lays awake for 30 mins or so before falling asleep. At the moment he wakes at 3am for a short feed and then goes straight back to sleep waking up again at 7am.
He then has a nap from 8am-9am and only wakes up because I take him to baby groups/swimming most days. He will then be asleep from 11am-1pm then 3pm-5pm!
I always think he's slept so much there's no way he could sleep all night but he does. When he's awake he feeds a lot and is generally a very happy baby.
Really want to know if anyone has a baby that sleeps so much too! I keep putting it down to growing fast as he is a huge boy!

5 hours in the daytime and 12 hours a night is normal for this age.

No advice but sooooo jealous. From memory I think his "awake time" between sleep sounds right, maybe even a little longer than usual for a 12 week old (for some reason 1hr- 1hr15 sticks in my mind but could be wrong). So I'd say give thanks to the universe and enjoy his happy little self when he's awake Grin

My DD has an almost identical pattern, except she goes to bed at 8pm and usually has an extra snooze 5.30-6pm. In fact of she doesn't sleep 5-6 hours in the day she usually doesn't sleep am as well at night. Enjoy it Grin

Should have said she is 12 weeks

My DD slept constantly for the first few months. My mother called every single day to tell me how worried she was about it. Hmm

Then DD stopped doing that and didn't sleep more than a three or four hour stretch at a time until she was one. So take advantage of it now, would be my advice! :) She's almost 2 now and sleeps normally. (As in, all through the night and then an hour to two hours in the afternoon.)

DS did that and I did a lot of googling about too much sleep.
A 4 month sleep regression later and I'm not worrying about that any more!

My DS2 is 11 1/2 weeks and has a similar schedule.
Awake 7am, Bfeed and get dressed.
Asleep 9-1030/11, BF feed and play after.
Asleep 1-2:15, BF feed before school run.
Asleep 4:00 -5, then BF feed again.
Play, bath, ready for bed and BF feed about 7:30
Dream Bfeed 10:15/10:30, formula top up,(needs to gain weight). Sleep by 11ish.
Wakes 4am for short feed

It does Vary each day according to what we do and have school runs to squeeze in plus delivering DS1 to activities which means he sometimes sleeps in car and has to be fed in the car/ slightly out of schedule.

I just consisder myself lucky he is so predictable and easy, my first DS was a nightmare, hated sleeping, couldn't gets BF established and we struggled with him drinking formula, he hated milk and still does at age 6.

cherrypiesally · 20/03/2015 13:51

Also, I do tend to BF on demand so it can change, but I think he would sleep longer if given the chance.

Wow that's a lot! Enjoy it!

DD is slightly older (17 weeks, 14 adjusted) but she 'woke up' at around 10 weeks & went from sleeping virtually all day and awake half the bloody night to barely napping at all but sleeping most of the night (still 1-2 night feeds FF).

She doesn't self settle for naps though & will only settle in my arms or the pram (but only when moving), so has to wait in the morning until me & DS are ready for the school run. By the time we leave she is already way overtired so we get a nap of between 10-30 mins & the rest of the day I am trying to catch her up. Naps last 45mins maximum & she probably has 3-4 a day. She fights any sort of nap after 4pm & is then horribly overtired by bedtime & screams, or if she does nap it takes until gone 8pm to get her settled.

Aside from the Great Battle of Sleep, she is a lovely smiley happy baby. I know this stage (short naps) is partly developmental & partly due to having to fit her in with DS's routine, which she will manage better with time, so I keep reminding myself of this & can't wait for her naps to start lengthening again. Roll on 6 months!
