Night weaning 17mo ds

So, my 17 month old is still waking in the night for milk. He was night weaned for a while but he got ill and we slipped back into bad habits. He is now waking around 11pm and is then up for upto 4 hours. He just won't settle back down. I know cutting out the milk would help but he just begs and begs for it once up. I lasted 2 Hours last night before I gave in. Anyone have any tips for cutting out milk for a stubborn toddler?!
Once he's been up he will usually then sleep in, today until 10am. Am I best getting him up early everyday so he doesn't think he can sleep in?
Tia for any help Smile

Not giving in is the answer, I am afraid.

Put him to bed at 7 pm and get him up at 7 am regardless of the night before. Otherwise he's using the extra hours as catch up for the night before and will keep repeating the same behaviour. Also don't extend naps.onthose days.Refuse milk-don't let him cry for 2 hours and then give in-he's cried for nothing and learnt that he will be rewarded for crying. It should only take 1-2 nights before he stops waking for milk.

Go away for 2-3 nights and instruct DH to give water only if he wakes up in the night.

Give him water in a sippy non spill cup.

Let him take it to bed with him.

thank you all for your advice. last night he wouldn't go down to 9 (trust me I tried!!) he woke at 11 30 and was up until 3 30 begging for milk, but I didn't give in and he didn't have any. He then slept till I woke him at 8. went down for his usual nap from 12-1 30 so hopefully staying right on track. will do the same tonight and get him up again tomorrow (he used to sleep 7-8 every night so I wont let him sleep past 8 now.) Hopefully he'll get the message soon!!

I also had dh do most of the night waking as I feel he's also waking up to see me. I just went in for the last hour to settle him to sleep.

Well done. Did you provide water?

roofio87 · 20/03/2015 14:16

Yeah he had a cup of water on the go so he had quite a bit of that. I've made a big deal today out of how good he did not having milk in the night so hopefully he's learning!!
