Is he in a normal cot or travel cot? Is he in a crib, moses basket, carry cot or proper cot?

Assuming your son is in a normal full-sized cot with a normal mattress, I cannot imagine this amount of unsettledness is to do with sleep position being a uncomfortable.

What do you mean by "stripping off his cot"?

Pillows are quite dangerous for babies, I wouldn't recommend.

I would suggest you trial and error other factors which could be causing the wake ups.

Maybe he is hungry? Try feeding at every wake up
Maybe he is cold? Try a baby sleeping bag
Maybe he is hot? Dress in fewer or lighter clothes
Maybe he wants comfort? Try giving a dummy to suck, a comforter toy or try co-sleeping
Maybe he is over tired? Get more daytime sleep
Maybe he can't settle to sleep by himself - try a dummy.
