16 month DS and early wakings

My DS is 16 months and has just started waking regularly at 6-6.15am (this morning it was 5.40!! Hmm). He was always a 7-7 sleeper. Do you think it could be time to cut his naps back? He'll have a maximum of 2 hours sleep over lunch time. Sometimes it's less if he's at nursery. I read somewhere that toddlers need 13-14 hours sleep per day but wondered if 16 months is too young to cut back and this is just a stage he's going through. Thanks!

Do you have dark or blackout curtains? It could be the earlier sunrise waking him. To be honest I have found that early rising is a phase that comes and goes but it worth adjusting nap a little.

Sounds counterintuitive but bring his bedtime forward by half hour, sleep trainers advice for early wakers! X

what time does he nap OP? And how long for?

IME early waking is often linked to either the timing of the nap (it may need shifting a touch later) or overtiredness (if the nap is very short & baby is overtired at bedtime try bringing bedtime earlier).
