Breaking a sleep association

Need some help. My 14 month old sucks mine or DH's finger to fall asleep. It's becoming a problem. He will sometimes suck his own thumb but mostly relies on ours. He's waking 2-3 times a night still - had one bf in night. Have a feeling the finger sucking is a problem now. Plus he gulps down air when he does it so then wakes to burp. Is cold turkey the only way? Any ideas how many nights of hell it might be?

No, cold turkey isn't the only way.

What's wrong with a dummy? It is not the work of the devil to give your baby something comforting to suck on. Should be no gulping down of air with a dummy and it acts like a loco breast for comfort.

Believe me we've tried. Since he was a month old. He just chews it. We've tried different shapes, brands etc to no avail.
