Gradual distancing

Hello, having big sleep issues and would appreciate some advice.

We have just started our near-five-month-old on the method of gradual distancing outlined by Mandy Gurney here: www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2006/dec/03/healthandwellbeing

On the first night our little boy took 30 mins to fall asleep in my arms but cried really loudly for all of that time. He then woke up twice and the pattern was repeated.

It worked well as it took the burden off my suffering girlfriend who hasn't been sleeping much, but we are concerned that he is crying too much.

Each time he cried less - is this a good method or will it prove too stressful for him?

Has anyone tried this kind of gradual distancing before and did it involve a lot of crying?

Thanks so much, appreciate all help!
