16 month old sitting up in cot ...

My DS has learnt how to sit up in his cot but is unable to lie back down on his own. He previously would settle on his own after waking in the night but now sits up and Talks/laughs/cries to himself for ages.
I don't know what to do for the best, go in and lie him down and try to settle him (but then he just sits up again and thinks it's a great game!) or leave him to grumble for a bit and hope that he falls back to sleep eventually and lies down!
I just wondered what others had done in this situation and how successful it had been?

Your 16 month old can't lie down from sitting up?! That's not right. I'd take him to see your health visitor/doctor.

He has been seeing a physio for the past 4 months Outraged with regards to his physical development. He is a bum shuffler and as a result hasn't learnt to move from lieing down to sitting up and vice versa like a child would who was crawling.

Well if he can't lie down by himself, then you have to go in and lie him down. You can't leave him sitting up all night. Is there anyway you can stop him sitting up in the first place? Maybe with a blanket tucked in quite tightly either side. Or maybe when you go in and lie him down, stay with him until he is asleep again, to save the sitting up/lie down game. I've never come across a child who could sit, but not lie down before. It's a tricky one.

My daughter is also 16 months - have you heard of "wonder weeks"? There is one around this age and it manifests itself in all sorts of ways including disturbed sleep as their wee brains get frazzled learning new skills.it may just be that?

He manages to pull himself up using the cot bars rather than doing it on his own. But then he's stuck. He has fallen asleep when napping sitting up, bent over with his head on his legs. I got a bit of a shock when I went him to check him as I couldn't work out he'd managed to sit up!

I have got the wonder weeks app smaths, I'll have a look at it to remind myself about this age. They change so fast don't they and he was just starting to become more predictable at naps and night time but that has all gone out of the window now!

my ds went through a similar phase, although he was younger. I simply had to endure going in to lie him back down. He learnt to lie himself back down again pretty quickly. hopefully your little one will do the same. sorry I can't offer more help.

I read about this issue in either the baby whisperer or Gina Ford book. They took their LO into the cot during the day to help show them how to get back down again. It worked after a few days of doing this according to that case study!

Well last night wasn't too bad as he only sat up when he woke in the morning (although that was at 4.45am which is a whole different story!) but it's naps that are difficult. He used to go in his cot, maybe cry in protest for a minute or so and then have a good sleep but the last couple of days he's just point blank refused to stay lieing down and cried. As a result he's ended up napping in the car.
I think we're just going to have to so as you say roof and persevere with lying him down until he gets the hang of doing it for himself!
