6mo naps getting shorter

Hi all,
Ds is 6 mo and been very consistently having a 45 min morning nap (wakes up himself) at 9am and then a 2 hr afternoon nap 12.15ish for some months. Suddenly he is just not tired for his afternoon nap and it was getting shorter so has been pushed back to nearly 1pm in the hope of him going nearly two hours and hopefully cutting the frankly ridiculous ten minute power nap at 4.30. He self settles easily apparently whatever time I put him down but can't seem to go more than an hour at lunch now. This is weird as it's more than one sleep cycle. Also he wakes and is completely silent (we have a video monitor) and I leave him for the other hour as occasionally he has nodded off again. He never complains...just watches! But then he is grumpy around 3.30 on the school run as if he needed longer.
Yesterday I just cut the silly afternoon nap but he was knackered by bedtime and couldn't finish his bedtime bottle. He was a mess during bathtime. I don't know why ten minutes of rubbish nap helps him through this.
I am inclined to persist with cutting this nap and perhaps he will start sleeping longer again at lunch. What do you think?
