3 year old nap tantrums

My only just 3 year old has always had a good 2 hour nap, 1-3pm, and then bed from 8.30pm and slept til 7am ish, The last few weeks he's been really trying it on at nap time, even though he looks tired, and sleeps for at least an hour when I finally get him to calm down. Is this a sign that he's finished with naps or is it a developmental thing and should I persevere?

My 3 DSs all did this around their second birthday. DS3 started to have a nap every other day, DS2 once or twice a week and then dropped it completely and DS1 just dropped the nap. I moved all their bed times earlier when the naps stopped. They were a bit cranky for a week or two but then they and I got used to it.

It does sound like the start of growing out of naps. Id do a nap every other day for a bit and see if that helps.

Thanks for the replies. I'd have said the beginning of the end of naps too, but oddly, I was out all day, and dh put him down for a nap without so much as a squeak Angry my worry about not napping is that he'll fall sleep on the school run or on the way home from ds1's clubs. The transition periods are always a pain...
