Done controlled crying - how to maintain it?

We started controlled crying about 10 days ago with our 6 month old - only needed it at bedtime - and it seems to have worked really well, I can put him down awake now and most nights he now goes to sleep without distress. I suppose he may test the boundaries from time to time and I'm quite happy to do the CC again. But what I wondered was what to do if he is teething/has a cold/other genuine reason for having trouble getting to sleep. How could I give him some extra TLC without being inconsistent?

Unfortunately with cc I believe it goes out the window when they are ill and you have to 're-train' when they are better.

We had to re-do cc for naps after going away for the weekend and messing his routine up. He seemingly "forgot" how to self settle but took about 3 days (same as initial time) to get things back on track again.
