Another drink, another story, etc

My 20 month old little boy has started delaying sleep and it's becoming a real battle. Sleep has always been an issue with him but this is a new one. At the moment we have a good bedtime routine and he sleeps in a single bed. One of us lays down with him until he falls asleep (CC didn't work for us).

This was working out really well but suddenly he's started asking for a drink, another story, another song, trying to play or even get up. When we say no he cries and throws a tantrum. The tantrums I can handle but putting him down is starting to take an hour to an hour and a half and it's driving me crazy! I'm worried that he's developing negative associations with sleep but I don't know how to make the experience any more pleasant for any of us. Anyone else experienced this?

I've been wondering if we're starting to enter the Terrible Twos as he has started throwing more tantrums, getting frustrated and angry when he doesn't get his way. Any tips would be much appreciated.
