Helping toddler wind down at bedtime

Is there any way to help my very active 16month old to wind down for bed? As a baby we had a lovely relaxing routine & he'd be asleep within 10 mins but now he won't stay still for massage, reading a story etc so he isn't really prepped for sleep and takes a while to drop off. Is there anything I can do to help or is it just a case of waiting for him to grow back into wanting a soothing routine?

I'd love to hear from others on this - similar situation in our house!
