Feeding for comfort?

Help! One day old and LO is already testing me! He's amazingly chilled out most of the time, but has had some really long feeds (over an hour). He seems to fall asleep mid-way through (despite still sucking away and it feels like he's still latched on) and when I break his rhythm and lay him down he's fast asleep. The second I put him in his cot he starts rooting - licking his lips, sucking his hands, sleeve, blanket etc. Any advice? He feeds several times during the day so I'm guessing he's not really hungry and just using me as comfort but my nipples have already reached their limit of abuse! Midwife was round today and he seems to be latching on ok.

If you are happy he has had a good feed pop a dummy in. As it is only the first couple of days he is doing this to help your milk come in so you may want to go with it a little more at this time. Use the dummy for a little break if you need to.

You are doing a great job, congratulate yourself on this.

If you can find a beside cot, changed my life at two weeks as you don't have to get out of bed to feed or comfort them you jut slide them across or strike them or change then whilst laying down Grin also saves you getting into a habit of walking with them at night to get them to sleep.

Good luck, you can do it. My DS didn't sleep for first 2 days and I didn't know how I was going to survive. After that he went 2-3h at a time between feeds.

Congratulations! This is perfectly normal and he's just building up your supply. I know it's exhausting (have a 5 day old feeding as I type
!) but it will settle. You're going exactly the right thing but feeding every time he looks for it. Well done, you're doing a great job.

Aw thank you both! He's a gorgeous little guy and is mostly really chilled out. Thank goodness for Lansinoh! Wink
