Is there a reason? Is it a phase? It's flipping annoying!

Hi. ds is 15 months old. He's slept through since he was 3 months but has had phases like any other where he hasn't slept well - illness, teething, imms etc. Recently (last month or two) for a couple of nights a week it seems like every week he will wake up during the night and be up for hours. Last night, for example, he went down like a dream at 7.30, then for no reason (there was no noise in the house) he woke up at 12.30 and was awake until after 3.30. He was relatively happy last night and was mostly chatting to himself, but sometimes he cries when he wakes up. Normally I try and put it down to a reason - a month ago we'd been on holiday, 3 weeks ago he had his MMR etc. But he did this on Sunday night and I can't think of a single trigger, and last night - well I've just finished bfing but he self-weaned and hasn't shown any sign of missing it. Am I grasping at straws - is this just the way it's going to be for a while and there's no underlying cause that I can "correct" and get a night's sleep? Or is there any advice anyone can offer? Has he just inherited a tendency to insomnia from me TIA x
