5mo turning over

DS is 5 months and in the last week has been flipping himself onto his front the moment I put him down to sleep. He falls asleep nearly straight away.

I've been turning him back after a little while but this sometimes causes him to wake and then he won't settle for ages.

I'm paranoid about SIDS. At what age/level of development will it be ok to let him turn himself and sleep on his front? He has turned front-to-back a couple of times, but doesn't do it often; he's v strong on his tummy, lifts his head and can push himself around on a mat etc

I don't know when the risk drops but I do know that I felt much more at peace once they were strong enough to roll over, push themselves up etc.

I never woke them to turn them once they were this age. I think the risk is highest between 1-4 months and they're more at risk if they were a low birth weight or if you're a smoker. The trouble is no one can be sure what causes it. But there are certain factors that they think increase risk.

I think it needs to really be what you feel comfortable with. SIDS is rare but if it worries you, keep turning them onto their back.

Have you asked your hv?

I'm not an expert at all. So hopefully some wiser people will be along soon.

I'd leave him to it tbh. Make sure the sheet is tight on his mattress and no blankets too near his face. If he's comfy sleeping on his front then turning him over is likely to just wake him up and he'll probably just turn back over in his sleep anyway.

My dd1 had awful reflux and could only sleep on her front on me so out of sheer desperation I put her to sleep on her front from 4 weeks as I was so sleep deprived. I just made sure that the sheets were well tucked in and her clothes weren't too loose with the potential to bunch up.

Once mine were able to turn themselves onto their front that's how they slept and still do at 5, 3 and 20 months.

Am sure I'm being massively overcautious even fretting about it. Seeing HV on mon so will ask then.
