Naps when out

Before i begin, I am very lucky that my 21 week ds seems to love his sleep and I am really grateful for this and understand others aren't as fortunate. However, he is only really a great sleeper if we stay at home. He will happily have 3/4 naps (seems to only be able to stay awake 1.5-2hrs) and then go to bed at around 8/8.30. This is lovely when we have no plans and are staying in. However he just will not fall asleep when we're out and just gets overtired and grumpy. He doesn't just fall asleep on me or in the middle of playing like my friends baby does and often won't in his buggy either unless really really tired and I'm moving but as soon as I stop he wakes. This makes going out quite difficult at times and also anxious about family holiday coming up. Family say 'oh it will be fine he'll sleep in his buggy' but I know he won't and worried will spend most of day/ night in hotel room. Just wondering if this is normal behaviour and if there is anything I can do to get him used to napping in places other than his cot?

Have you tried a sling?

I'd grit my teeth and persevere with letting him try to sleep in the buggy if I were you. You don't want to be held hostage by this for the next couple of years. Maybe try putting his buggy in the room he normally naps in then after a couple of days putting him in the buggy to nap?

like jayne says above: slowly get him more used to the buggy as a place to sleep. by putting it in the same place as the cot at first. can you make the buggy feel more similar to the cot in any way? is there a cuddly, blanket or bumper that you could either use the same one in both or have two and keep one in the buggy?

Try replicating his nap time routine in the buggy, but in his bedroom.

Or have you tried a snooze shade? My DS will fall asleep in 5 minutes out in his buggy with a snooze shade on - it stops him merrily looking round at the scenery!

Ds is 8 months and is like this. He stopped napping in the sling/my arms at 3 months and hasn't been great to sleep in the buggy since 5 months. I have a big sunshade for the buggy which stops him looking out. Could you alternate cot naps with buggy naps on holidays, and take turns with your dp?
