Gradual retreat/withdrawal question

Has anyone tried gradual withdrawal/retreat?
I want to try it with DS, but something I'm not sure about. In the beginning, when you are sat by the cot, if they cry do you just let them cry? Talk to them? Pick them up?
I'm suspect that DS will cry, probably for quite a while, so I want o be sure what I am supposed to do if he does.

Has anyone had success with this method?

DD is only 10 weeks so I've no plans for any sleep training for months yet if even but I did bookmark this thread (obsessive much?) which might help you- it sounds like some form of gradual retreat I think, and it's pretty detailed!
