Grunting and groaning

I am hoping someone can help me as I really need some sleep! My 5 week old baby has started really grunting and groaning all the time. He is worse at night and when I feed him. He goes red in the face like he is straining, brings his knees up and groans constantly. I am struggling to feed him as he goes so rigid and shakes his head away from the bottle. It upsets me to hear him making the noises all the time although he doesn't seem to be in pain just uncomfortable. He's formula fed on aptamil and poos once a day. Any help appreciated!

Sounds like wind... do you find he is happier (and will go back on the bottle) after a burp/fart? if you bicycle his legs does he release wind?

He brings up his wind fine (both ends). And lots of it. I can hear the milk bubbling away in his tummy as it goes down and for a while after. I presume this is normal?

It sounds like my friends baby who had reflux. She went to the Dr and got baby gaviscon that goes in to her bottle. She is much happier now. She also puts her to sleep with her head slightly raised.

My 6-week old ds is similar. We've been prescribed Gaviscon for reflux but only started it today so haven't seen any effect yet. I'm not sure how many of his symptoms are down to reflux though - apparently a lot of babies do make lots of straining noises which is just them learning how to open their bowels. We have the groaning from about 3am every night even though he's asleep and it's driving me mad!

Both mine were the same - only in the early hours too! I think it's the developing bowels. Both of them grew out of it by 12 weeks. Infacol might help if there's a particularly bad wind issue too.

Currently still awake from 3.30 feed with exactly the same issue!

Try More winding, of not then I'd say its likely reflux, my DD had it, and just started gaviscon yesterday with DS.

Signs are posseting, back arching, feed refusal, screaming etc

Stick a couple of books under the head end of the cot, see doctor about gaviscon (it's not over the counter gaviscon) hold them up for 20-30 mins after a feed or use a bouncy chair to keep them more upright directly after.

They grow out of it eventually!
