How old do children have to be until they can have a pillow in their cot ?

My DS is eleven months old and when downstairs and tired he goes to the cushions on the floor and lays his head on them, he also has a comfort toy he does the same with, wondered whether he might sleep better with pillow, but do not want it to be dangerous for him.

The recommendation is not to use a pillow under 12 motnhs. I have just bought one for dd 15 months, and she ends up sleeping on the foot end of the cot without it! lol.

Can it just be a normal pillow or something special ?

we used a normal adult sized but quite flat pillow from when dd was around 1 year. You can buy special cot pillows but we didnt bother with them
