Moving DS from cot to a toddler bed - when?

DS is nearly a year old and quite a big baby. He is currently still sleeping in his cot (standing up in his grobag and hanging onto the rails inthe morning!) Just wondering when we should move him to a big bed. And if we do move him, should we get a cotbed or go straight to a toddler bed with the side panel?

My ds was 1.9 when we took the side off his cot bed, and 2.9 when he moved into a big bed ('cos we needed the cot for dd)

As long as your ds isn't able to climb out of his cot, I'd leave him as long as possible.

My dd was 18 months when she climbed out of the cot and banged her head, rather forcing the issue of when to move her! We found a mattress on the floor was the best option for that age.

My DD is 20 months & tries to climb out of her cotbed so I think it's time to take the sides off. BUT.... How do you get them to stay in bed? I'm sure she'll keep getting out...?

That's the hard bit!

sorry, no advice, find it hard enough to get my own kids to stay in bed!

DD was 21m when we put her in a (cot) bed. She fell out a few times, but a short distance onto an old cot mattress. Didn't seem to bother her. It now bothers us at bedtime when she just gets out of bed and follws us to the door wailing!

I'd say if he makes a move to climb out of his cot then move him, otherwise keep him where he is for now, he's still very wee.

i'd also keep him in his cot - leave it until he is making moves to get out by himself - dd2 who is 20 months has climbed out 3 times in the past few days so we're off to get her a bed on the weekend. It's a long drop down!

you don't need a cotbed or even toddler bed - you could have a single bed with a side guard when he's ready
