I've been stuck trying to work out my 3yo routine for over a month now. And i can't seem to get it just right.
Currently i've been trying:
WU 7.30
Nap put down 12.30-2.00 (usually asleep by 1.45)
Bedtime pd 8.30 (doesnt sleep til 9.30-10.00)

The problem is she doesn't get enough sleep at night and after a few days she ends up having overtired night wakings.

I'd be trying to keep her awake during the day. If I have my DT's in the car for a 30 mins or so journey I try everything to keep them awake (windows open, music, etc) otherwise they won't sleep at night.
They sleep from 8pm to 5:30 or 6am.

I tried no naps and i don't think she was ready. Even with a 6.30 bedtime. We were getting NW. So i cut her down her nap from 2-3 hours. To max 1.5hrs. But she still has NW every few days ??

If you out her to bed at 6:30/7 what time does she go to sleep?
8:30/9 seems a very late bedtime to me.
My Dd stopped napping at about 2.6 so I'm not sure.
I think I'd be cutting back the nap and having a much earlier bedtime.
2-3 hours is a lot for her age but some kids do seem to need it more.

Hmm i haven't actually tried putting her to sleep earlier with a nap. I'll try the earlier bedtime for a few days and see how it goes.

At the time when she was still having a nap she would sleep from maybe 2-3:30 or so and then bedtime has always been 7/7:30pm.
If she wasn't getting to bed til 8:30 she'd be very over tired.
I would suggest that is possibly why it's taking so long for her to go to sleep.
Is she in bed by 8:30 and then taking up to an hour and a half to go to sleep?
That suggests an overtired, overwrought child to me who is struggling to wind down.

Mine at 3 ( one is still 3), nap 1.30-3pm. Bed 8.30/9pm, wake 8.30/9am

GiveTwoSheets · 01/06/2014 19:54

Cant advise about nap times as lucky mine stopped by himself but I remember that had to take him to bed earlier as other wise he go into overtired mode and night wakings.

Also he had back molars coming through so don't think that helped with nw could that be a possibility?

Mine are 2.8 and still definitely need a good nap 90 per cent of the time.

Wake: anytime between 5.30 and 8.30 am Confused
Nap: From 12.30-1-00 to 2.00-3.30.
Dinner 5.30/6ish
Bath 7
Story, lights out around 8.15.

DD is 3 year 1 month.

She wakes up: whenever she pleases (between 5.30am and 8.30am)

She has a nap (sometimes): about 6-7 hours after she wakes in the morning- for approx 2 hours. Ideal time is 1-3 but of course this makes lunch time a bit of a faff as either 12 is too early/close to breakfast and that means when she wakes at 3 she'll be hungry again and nagging all afternoon for something more sufficient than a snack.

She goes to bed: when she's tired enough. (We try for 8pm)

Today she woke at 8.30. ShockShockShock

Then whined all day because we didn't let her nap, went to bed at 7.30.

It's a toss up between having a pleasant day and a well rested toddler in bed a little later due to late nap

Or

A child that is irritable, throws tantrums, has melt downs... But goes to bed at a good time.

Khadija89 · 03/06/2014 14:36

So last two nights i've put her to bed at 7.30pm. Both nights she fell asleep at 9.00pm. Slight progress...but still an hour and a half playing. Last night she actually woke up at 1.00am-3.00am. So today i gave her an earlier nap same wake up time. 12-2pm.

So my question is bedtime even earlier tonight? 7pm? Or 7.30?

Where am i going wrong? :-(

I don't know if there's an answer... To be honest it's a tricky age as they are in between needing and not needing as much sleep. DD went to sleep at 9.30 last night and woke at 5am! Other days goes to bed on cue at 8pm, wakes up at 8am.
Maybe try cutting nap to 1 hour?
