7 weeks & sleeping all day & all night.....

I'm waking her to feed her in the day but surely she should be awake more by now? she was aawke quite a bit yesterday & in the week so wonder if she's playing catch up _I'm Just find it a little disconcerting that's all! (& also worried that she will be wide awake all night!!) have tried waking her today by every means I can think of but she's having none of it!

How is her night sleep? If it's not affecting it (I guess she's waking 2-3 times in the night for milk?) then I wouldn't worry about it personally. But if you're feeding more often than that they she could be getting things the wrong way round. I always found I had good days and bad days, ie. she'd sleep lots on days when I was out and about, but if we were at home I could keep her amused for longer.

I think mine used to go down for a first nap after being awake for 2hrs (I would count 6am or 7am as the start of my day!), then awake for a couple of hours, then asleep again, then awake again... maybe getting 3-4 naps in the day? Then bed at 9pm-ish, waking 2-3 times in the night for a feed.

What is your 'routine' ?

I think I was giving about 6 (breast)feeds in the day.

the last few days were pretty much as you decribe - sleep/eat/play - sort of baby whisperer type thing. It was brill & I loved it!!! our day starts about 7 ish & ends 7ish as well. she feeds about 7/9.30/12.30/3.3.0/4.30/6.30 tehn bed then at least once at night.
she has been awake since 3.30 si hopefully is tiref enough tp sleep tonight!!
I justfind it so difficult never kknowing from 1 day to teh next whether it will be a routine day or not. I love routine& find I get very stressed when it doesn't happen.
she has also only been taking one boob at at ime today rather than 2 so my boobs are confused as well!!

Mixed up boobs makes me grumpy, not only dealing with the kids but a sore chest too!

I found it helpful to plan my week out, know which day/s I had to go food shopping or whatever. But I always tried to work it that I'd have a couple of days in a row at home. Then the routine would stick. Then on the days I did go out I tried to plan the outing with her sleep.

I think if she's only waking once at night for you that's great! The number of feeds sounds good too. The only thing I might add is that sometimes if feeds are too close together then they sometimes get into a pattern of small frequent feeds as their tummy's never completely empty and they don't get the 'hunger' feeling. Maybe try shifting the feeds out by 15-30mins, eg. 7/10/1//4/7 ? If you feed before naps then this may help you keep her awake that little bit longer too?

I must admit though, if the night's aren't bothering you (which are the hardest time to deal with a newborn) then I wouldn't rock the boat and just go with the flow. It seems to be working for you atm. I was still feeding 3 times a night at 7wks so I think once a night is bliss!

thanks everyone. I think its just that she is so differnt from how i remember my son being that I panic over ervy little thing, thinking that somehting must be wrong. she has slept all day again today - until 4pm & I've had to wake her to feed her. she has also dropped from having both boobs every feed to just 1.
part of me wnats to ring NHS direct & say I'm worried about my babay - but DH thinks I'm mad & says she is fine - I just don't know (I am a worrier by nature though!!)

My dd is completely different to my ds too. My ds would take looooonnnngggg feeds but my dd is a snacker and has lots of little feeds over the day (or did at 1-3months). Sometimes they need more rest when having a growth spurt, do you think she is? If it were me I would try to make sure baby was getting atleast 6 feeds in a day. Does she have any other signs of anything, eg a cold, maybe she's conserving energy? There is nothing wrong in ringing NHSD and I'm sure they'll give you a 'professional' guideline on how long this might go on for and when to consult your GP/HV. If she seems well in herself when awake and does stay awake for a period of time, fully aroused, happy, chirpy, etc then she might just be growing. If it lasts for more than a week then it may affect her growth if she's not getting enough milk. If you're concerned about your milk supply try and express the other side she doesn't feed off so your boobs keep on producing to her previous intake. Even if your milk does get used to the fewer feeds it will only take a few days of lots of sucking, ie. put her on more frequently, and the supply will boost (does take a couple of days to notice the difference). HTH I know how easy it is to worry about these things
