Transition from cot to bed

So, DC1 is now 21 months and we've moved him from his cot to his bed as he kept climbing out of it every five minutes. Now he keeps running around upstairs. It's taking him two hours or so to actually sleep in the bed. Any ideas to help him settle?

Sit with him until he sleeps. Did the job for us until ds got used to it.

He won't sit or lie down though. He keeps running around and becoming more hyper active. Think it could be a combination of the bed/the clock's changing. He's got so much energy at the moment.
