Panicking new mum! Help!

My five-day old has slept ALL day long, only waking for feeds and then going straight back to sleep.

For the past couple of days she's been fairly restless. It's been really difficult getting her to settle, in fact, as she usually only falls asleep in arms, so this is a bit of a godsend, but I can't help but be worried. Is this normal?

Totally normal. If she's feeding/ peeing as normal she's probably just exhausted. Just think, 5 days ago she was still resting full time.

Many people call the first 3 months the '4th' trimester. Given for when apparently we would be best to be born ie after 12 months. However we have evolved to have big heads hence the 9 month gestation instead. Try not to stimulate her so much over the next few weeks as you will probably find it just makes her cranky. Hence babies like being cuddled up to parents/ close in sling

Definitely agree! Expect a newborn to require milk, nappy change and naps on a continuous cycle. Slowly the awake time will get longer and the naps will get a little shorter and more regular and every so often they will feed non-stop for a couple of days. There will many times when you utter the 'is this normal?' question and the answer is usually 'yes'.

As long as she wakes often for feeds and has plenty of wet nappies then yes.

My dm used to complain dd was always asleep when she saw her HmmGrin I told her to come round at night!

Thanks everyone for the reassurance. Just so nervy as it's so different from just yesterday!

DH has been doing most of the nappy changes today and is colour blind so he says he can't tell whether the wees/poos are normal. Will keep an eye but thanks so much for all your help.

If feeding and having plenty of wet and dirty nappies then odds are things are fine. She's not looking yellowish is she? My DD developed jaundice when she was 3 days old and we has to be readmitted to hospital for a week. Call your midwife if you're concerned.

Normal! They don't even know they're born, just keep them fed, warm (not too warm) and clean nappies. They thrive on it. Congratulations and stop worrying?

Mine are young adults now, waiting for the gc's :)

How long between feeds? I had a sleepy one who wasn't okay, but the warning sign was infrequent feeds (all worked out fine in the end!)

Mine was like this and had to be woken to feed every three hours, took ages to wake her and was really worrying! She's now three weeks old and is more awake and doesn't need to be woken to feed anymore thankfully!

Just make sure they're eating enough and check their poo/wee progress
