1 year old refusing to sleep in his cot!

Hi would really appreciate any advice here...

My one year old used to be fantastic at going to sleep, both for naps and night time, I'd lay him down, turn on his mobile, listen to him google and gurgle on the monitor and wait for him to fall asleep.
Then we flew to France where he refused point blank to sleep in his travel cot. I had to co-sleep with him the whole time (just cried and cried when I left him and I'm too weak and pathetic to listen to his heartbreaking cries).
I thought 'never mind, he'll settle once we're back home and his 'routine' can commence...'
The trouble is, since returning a week ago, he has gone from still taking his daytime naps in his cot and refusing nighttime ones to refusing ALL naps in his cot!
He pulls himself up to stand at the bottom of the cot and howl until I appear. We had a pathetic half hearted 1 hour attempt at CC and it destroyed me. I cannot bear it. I've read him stories for hours, tried 'pick up put down' until my back felt about to snap, then given in and put him in bed with me.
Help. Should I try 'pick up put down' (it's so annoying to attempt!) for longer? I don't think I can try CC again.
Any advice gratefully received...
