Our 11 week old has been swaddled at night from birth. Firm , not tight around chest and so pelvis and legs are kept loose. The reason was that he trashes is arms and awakes himself up otherwise. So far so good, but now he is bigger and we have few problems.
He is too big for swaddling cloths and because of the cold temperature we were swaddling in a fleece like material.
He only sleeps if swaddled fully. Half swaddling doesn't do the trick. Then around 5am he frees his arms but brings the swaddling cloth to his face.. That is not good with the fleece so what should I do?
We bought a gro bag but after 2 nights of not sleeping and crying I think that no point trying more. Tonight ( would be 3rd night) he trashed his arms and cried for 45 minutes. I finally gave up and swaddled in the fleece blanket and he slept in few minutes.

Please what should I do? And for how long? If he is freeing himself in the morning is it a sign he shouldnt be swaddled?
And material to be used?

Thank you for your help!

Ps it is only any night time. During the day he sleeps in his travel cot happily without swaddling...

We had a special swaddling blanket called swaddle-me, with Velcro to hold it closed.

I used a cot sheet for swaddlign a cotton ine, sort of flannelete material so thry havea bit of stretch. When they were tiny I folded it in half so it wasnt too big.

When it was hot I would use a big muslin cloth.

I have tried an array of things including purpose made ones, but the best was an old flannelette sheet.

We used to swaddle in cellular blankets in the winter and giant muslins in the summer.

We use the swaddle me, it is brilliant, like a baby straight jacket!

The Velcro was strong enough for us, although dd was a dinky little thing.

The main thing for us was that it saved us trying to swaddle a baby while half awake at 3am
