Toddler night terrors?

Ds2 has always been a terrible sleeper. At 19mo still wakes up at least twice a night and I end up climbing into his bed and sleeping (yes, bed- cot was a bloody nightmare and he slept even less in that) as otherwise I'd be up and down settling him.

He is teething at the moment, so sleep is worse than usual but last night was something else. He woke up at 11.30 after not going to sleep until 9pm and he was screaming from the moment he woke. We tried to calm him but touching him made it worse. He was screaming and thrashing around, throwing things, hitting things. Eventually we just stayed in the room and he calmed down, then was happy as larry but not that sleepy. He also wakes up screaming from naps and has a tantrum after nearly every nap wake up.

Could it be night terrors? Or is he too young? I know the advice is more sleep if they have them, but we're trying our best to do that! I'm at a bit of a loss as ds1 was an ok sleeper, never amazing but never bad and nothing as scary as this.
