suddenly waking up crying

hello, C as started waking up crying or even crying in his sleep?? sometimes he can get really distressed and i dont know whats causing it. I know ive had problems in the past with lots of juice in the night but that is now sorted. anyone got any ideas please?

How old? Could be nightmares. DS sometimes wakes up really distressed and it's obvious he's been dreaming. I just go in and comfort him without picking him up (stroking his tummy, shushing him, singing 'his' song) and he goes back off to sleep again.

C is 13 months but its every night. i did think it could be nightmares but i hoped it wasnt as its every night and i wouldnt like to think hes having them every night. i have done the BIG NONO and put him in bed with me.

How long has this been going on?

DS is 15 months and has phases of doing this - often it is just wind and he goes back to sleep but it can be quite upsetting watching him as he squirms around.

Sometimes we take him out his cot and rub his back and other times we just place a hand on his back to soothe but we've resisted the bring him into bed. In all cases he will go back to sleep but it might be half an hour or so.

It could be related to what you have given him to eat/ drink - we worked out that strawberries make him do this if we give them to him too close to bedtime.

A sleep councillor told me that it takes three days to make a habit and three days to break one - just to be aware of bringing him to bed too much if you don't want to form a habit!

Monkey - DD started doing something at that age (now 16 months) lasted about a month. Started waking with a funny waily type cry. I'd leave her for a few minutes and it would often stop and that would be the last we heard for the night. If it carried on, I'd go in to find DD crying but she didn't seem to be really aware of me, as if she wasn't really awake. I'd just lie her back down, give her her blankie and stroke her head and talk quietly to her for a minute or so. I'd then leave the room and she'd be fine. She's stopped doing it now and I still don't know what caused it, but think it's a stage. Could be the start of nightmares, who knows. Hopefully, it will also only be a stage for you. Think the key is to handle it in as low key manner as possible, so that you don't wake them properly.

ive had problems with his sleep since about 3 months once he started to get ill. the crying only really started this week. we did have a good few days last week but we have gone down hill again. hes been a bit off this week and hasnt really eaten alot? think it might be a trip to the doctors tomorrow.
hes gone really clingy now as well so i dont know if its all related.

could be the sign that he is coming down with something. DS got hand foot and mouth a few weeks ago and for about 4 days before he was restless and woke up crying.

I do agree with jambot that you should try and keep it as low key as possible because often they arenot really awake.

c still woke over the weekend and i put him in bed with me. BUT last night i was on a mission. C woke up from 1.30am and finally fell back to sleep at 3.15am and i never took him out of his room which is a mission in its self. Hopefully if i do this all week he will know hes not coming to bed with me.
