DS is 16 months and I went back to work 2 days a week 2.5 months ago. My DH looks after our DS when I am at work.
Normally DS is a good sleeper, he sleeps roughly 7pm-6.30am unless he is teething or is ill.
The weird thing is that the night before my 2 work days he has not really slept at all for the last 2.5 months. He sleeps for a few hours in the evening and then wakes up around 11pm and gets really upset unless I hold him. If I try and put him down he cries, if my DH tries to settle him he screams "Mummy" hysterically until I come back. There is nothing obviously wrong and he is calm as long as I hold him. We end up cosleeping except I can only doze because I am kind of holding him so I am not very comfortable and it is making my job, which I love, hard to do because I am so tired.
Is it possible that such a young child has worked out that I am not going to be there the next day and is protesting about it? That seems unlikely! But what else could it be?

Could he be picking up on your anxiety? I never sleep too well the night before a workday.

Or is there anything you do differently on those evenings?

I make a point of keeping the evenings the same, but maybe it is my anxiety communicating itself... not sure what to do about that, my anxiety is getting worse!
