Seven year old sleep help

DS1 is seven and looks permanently knackered! He has huge dark circles under his eyes and his behaviour towards the end of the day can be awful.

He goes to bed at 7.00 but can lie awake for up to an hour before actually going to sleep. He is then awake any time from about 5.30 to 6.00ish. This is often prompted by needing the loo and then he doesn't go back to sleep.

If it weren't for the obvious signs of tiredness I would think he doesn't need 12 hours but he clearly needs more sleep. He says he is "not like other people" and can't fall asleep easily.

Does anyone have any tips to encourage him to at least sleep a bit longer in the morning? So far he is OK at school but his behaviour/attainment may well start to deteriorate there soon if he doesn't get some sleep!

I would like to help, but my 6 yr old dd is just the same. I've just come on here looking for similar advice! She won't even just lie there on her own for an hour, I have to lie down with her still to get her to sleep, if I try and leave her she gets so wound up it can be nearly 9 before she sleeps.
She is tired all the time, she is not fit to do much after school. I will never complain when she is a teenager and sleeps in till midday!

I posted a thread a few days ago about the same type of thing. My dd is 9 though, so sorry it doesn't just mean a specific age.
Also, if this is any help to others my dd doesn't attend school so its not school related necessarily.
What have others tried?
