Non sleeping children. Help!

My nearly five month old has gone from two hefty naps in morning and afternoon to twenty mins here and there. So far this morning he has been up since 6.45 am to 1pm and he has had fifty mins worth of sleep.

Is this normal. I can't get anything done as he doesn't sleep and he isn't happy sitting in a bouncy chair. He has learnt to sit up and is trying to crawl. Is this a developmental thing?
He has started waking every two hours in the night again.

I can't cope with another non sleeping child! My dd dropped her naps at 18 months and didn't sleep through until three years old. She is now nearly four and has only just started to need more than nine hours a night.

Is it genetic?
