When will this phase pass?

For the last few nights, every time my 10mo DS wakes in the night he stands up and cries. I lay him down and he falls asleep for a few seconds but then wakes up, stands again and cries. It's like his brain wants to sleep but his body needs to stand!

This happens every hour from about 12am and it can take up to half an hour to settle him again. I mostly refuse to let him fall asleep in my arms as it's taken us 4/5 months to get him to fall asleep in his cot, so I keep laying him down until he does go to sleep.

He's never been a brilliant sleeper - on a good night he wakes 4 times and on a bad night, 10. He was doing pretty well before this started (waking about 4 times for up to 10mins at a time) and now I feel like we're going backwards.

So, will it pass or should I be doing something to help him? I go back to work in a couple of weeks and seriously couldn't function if this continues!
