How much sleep is 'too much'

Really dont want to piss anyone off- already had hateful glares at Postnatal Group yesterday.

DD is 20 days old- and literally asleep all of the time- I would say that on average she is asleep about 21 hours over teh 24 hour period. Wakes for a feed- has a look around etc and then back off to sleep.

goes to sleep at 9pm - wakes at 1.30 for a feed and change- back asleep by 2.15am- wakes at around 6-45/7am - feed, change and then back off again until around 9.30.

similar pattern throughout the day-

I know she is still very young but im worried about her 'fatigue'

anyone had similar experiences? DS2 was a nightmare until the age of 3 and I was up all night every night so this really is unchartered territory for me.

How frequently is she feeding? Sometimes little babies are sleepy if they're not getting enough food...

Does she have wet/dirty nappies and is she putting on weight? If so everything is almost certainly fine. My DD used to sleep like that, gave up her night feed at 8 weeks and continued to be a good sleeper. When she was ill she slept even more but she was always a very efficient feeder.
She's 21 now and just finished uni so I would hazard a guess that it didn't stunt her brainSmile Oh and she still loves her sleep.

She has 4 fl.oz approx every 3/4 hours. I change her every time she is fed and her nappies are wet. She also has 1 dirty nappy a day. She is also putting on weight.

You think she is ok then ? Just a bit lazy?!

I very much doubt anything is wrong with her but do mention it when you see the HV or GP if you are still worried. It sounds like she's just a good sleeper which may or may not change as she grows up.
I don't know much about the amounts as DD was BF but you can probably look those up. Hope your peace continues, I was always on tenterhooks waiting for DD to become a bad sleeper, I was also convinced anymore DC's would be dreadful sleeper but the two DS's were as fond of sleep as their sister. I just kept very quiet about it at toddler groups.Grin

A friend of mine has two boys. The first was like your dd, slept almost the entire day until he was about four months old. He's a perfectly normal 3 year old now. Her second was also quite a sleepy baby, but more awake than his brother. He probably slept 18-19 hours a day and started being more wakeful around four months old. He's now a perfectly normal 1 year old.

I would say as long as she's gaining weight and having wet/dirty nappies then let her sleep.

My daughter was just like that, until about 4 months then woke up a bit! She's perfectly fine now at 4, although she still likes her bed?
