Is it habit or is he hungry?

Hi I have ds 16weeks old and he hasn't slept for longer than 6hrs at night time.
He eats well during the day 5-6 6ozs bottles and has his last feed around 10.30/11pm.
He wakes anytime between 3.30-5am and will not settle again without a bottle which once he's finished he will go back over without much fuss until 6.30/7am.
This is what I have been used to from he was born and I right or wrongly assumed that ds would just stop waking when he was no longer needing a feed in the night.
Friends and family have been offering suggestions of giving him water and shhh pat back to sleep but I have tried shhh pat and it doesn't work ds just ends up screaming and waking dp!
My main question is should I be doing something (not sure what) to encourage ds to sleep through his waking in the night is it just habit or is he actually hungry and how would I know this?

Thank-u for your fast replies ladies I had always thought to myself that he will sleep through when he is ready.
Unfortunately through sleep deprivation I have been listening to others who's babies have slept through from earlier I will now ignore all helpful advice on this and continue to feed my ds when he wakes in the night!
