Moving 21 month old from cot to bed

Hi all,

I was wondering if I could get some advice please?

Our second baby is due in 3 months on our DD's 2nd birthday. At the moment DD1 sleeps in a grobag in her cot and we have recently got to a stage where she settles herself to sleep and mostly sleeps through the night (unless teething).

We have 2 options sleep-wise - we either keep her in a cot until next year when we move her into a bed (we have a second cot for the new baby). Or we move her into a bed about 6 weeks before the new baby arrives.

Part of me thinks we shouldn't rock the boat as she's sleeping well, doesn't try to climb out etc, but I've had a lot of people telling me it's easier to move them younger as at this age they don't realise they can get out of the bed by themselves yet?! Apparently I used to sit in bed in the morning and call for my mum... Also it would make it easier when we stay with family as we wouldn't have to try to find 2 travel cots, but to be honest that's not the most important criteria in all this.

If we do move her does anyone have ay advice regarding changing from grobags to duvets?

Many thanks!

I would leave her in the cot as would be a shame to disrupt her sleep now. The last thing you need is a toddler repeatedly getting out of bed whilst you're dealing with a newborn!

We have a similar dilemma in that we want to move ds1 21 months to his 'big boy' bedroom so that ds2 6 months can be moved to the nursery but not sure whether to move him in his cot or just go straight to his bed. We took advantage of the heatwave to drop his gro bag. His room was like an oven so didn't even need a blanket most nights then when it cooled we used a coverlet & now it's cooler we're using that with a cellular blanket. We've got a quilt for when it starts to get colder. We thought we'd get him used to that before moving to a bed so everything isn't completely different.

Thank you WillSingForCake - I do think that knowing that she is safe in her cot will be a bonus when I am up with a newborn. Also I did wonder if moving her 5 weeks before the baby arrives would be a bit too close to the event.

ab00 - good luck with your move. We only have 2 bedrooms, so the baby will be in with us for the foreseeable future so we won't have to worry about moving DD1. Wish I'd thought about dropping the grobags after the heat ended but they are so easy :)

Any other thoughts gratefully received...
