Help with night time sleep for six month old please!

DS is 6m, waking 1-2x per night for feeds. If it is
early eg 11-2am he will settle straightaway after
feeding. If he feeds at 4-5am, he will fall asleep
on the boob (usually) but when I put him down
he will often wake and can then take an hour to
resettle. Eventually he will go to sleep without
me there but I have to listen to him whining for
an hour. He normally self settles for naps (2-3 naps
per day) and if he doesn't fall asleep whilst feeding he
self settles for the night. He only sleeps 2-3 hours
in the day so I don't think that is the issue . Help please!

We had exactly this issue. I think it's because by 4/5am they have had most of the nights sleep so aren't all that tired any more. (DD has now dropped night feeds but still wakes ridiculously early - so be warned, this might be a signal that you have an early waker in the making...).

Is your DS still having a late afternoon nap? if so it might improve once that goes at least for a while

Shatteredmamma1 · 12/09/2013 07:22

Thanks minipie. He's been doing this for about 3
Weeks but has only just dropped the late
Afternoon nap in the last week or so ( think
he might have had one yesterday if I'd
let him but we were busy!!). How old is your
DC? And what time do they wake up now?!

DD is 10 months now, she sleeps through (well, when she's not teething which seems to be all the time) but wakes at 5.30-6. If she wakes before 5 I can generally get her back to sleep but if it's later than that she's up for the day.

Shatteredmamma1 · 13/09/2013 06:08

How do you get her back before 5am? Are
you Bf? Right now 7-5.30/6 would be great!
Been up the whole night I think with teeth
also...agh. ! When did your DD drop her
Night feeds?

Tbis sounds weird but I have read that if you do a dreamfeed before midnight then it helps with this problem- apparently this is still the light sleep cycle. Whereas if you feed after midnight you are interrupting deeper sleep and it throws them off for the rest of the night. This worked mostly for us but we still had some of those annoying early wakings until about 8 mths with dd.

minipie · 13/09/2013 14:51

If she wakes now in the night it's generally teeth so cuddles and/or nurofen mostly work to get her back to sleep. I am bf but don't feed in the night any more (not since she was about 7/8 months - we did a couple of nights of CC to drop the last night feed as I was pretty certain by then it was habit not hunger). I wouldn't expect night feeds to stop before properly weaned ie eating 3 solid meals a day incl protein etc but by 7/8 months dd was eating masses!

Shatteredmamma1 · 13/09/2013 15:07

Oh yes minipie- I saw you'd dropped the NF
from earlier post- sorry baby brain!! Think we
will have to do CC at some point but you're
right he's only just on 3 meals and that's
mostly fruit / veg still.

Mewkins that's really interesting- I've only
done a DF occasionally so maybe I should
try that again. I'd do anything for sleep at
the mo!!

Someone else help please-DS has been
awake since 3 and I cannot get him back
to sleep- am going to scream at him very
soon. Any other suggestions? To be fair
He went to sleep at 6.30, but 6.30-3 is not
enough sleep IMO. Help...

Oh dear! hope you got him back to sleep eventually. Any chance he is teething or about to crawl?

minipie · 14/09/2013 08:43

or about to learn to sit?

Shatteredmamma1 · 14/09/2013 15:37

Thank you. He did just after I posted, and
about a minute after I'd woken DH! Oh well!
Yes he is teething I think, and also trying
to crawl. Is there therefore hope this will
pass???!!
