Transition from Moses basket to cot

Hi, my 16 wk old ds has definately outgrown his Moses basket so a few nights ago we tried him in his cot. It was a terrible night!! He normally wakes 2-4 times in the night & I feed him back to sleep, then pop him in his basket; usually he'll then sleep for 3-4 hrs straight. However in his cot he was waking within 10 mins of being put down and was very distressed, screaming & crying, which is unusual for him.

He'll happily play in the cot during the daytime, but won't nap there (he's not that great at naps anyway!). The last 2 nights he's slept in the basket in the cot quite happily (next to our bed). I brought a bumper to make the cot cosier but I've read so many conflicting stories regarding bumpers I'm not sure whether to use it or not.

Any tips? Should I use the bumper?

Thanks

If you are concerned about the safety of the cot bumper you could try the airflow ones, I think the advice on cot bumpers may have charged now but they were thought to be a risk because they restrict airflow and also you need to make sure the ties are secure and out of the way. They do help to keep little arms and legs from poking out and getting stuck when they are a bit older though!

You could try something like this is you think your baby is overwhelmed by the size of the cot

Or just stick it out for a few nights of disturbed sleep and hope he gets used to it soon

My LO went into his cot when he was 8 weeks. He is very long for his age and just couldn't fit into his basket. The first few nights, I put the sheet from his Moses basket in the cot so that the feel and smell were familiar. Also his comforter and teddy went with him, making as much as possible the same. We put him in it during the day so he could get used to it.

My HV told me that cot bumpers were a no-no due to increased SIDS risk. To be honest, I didn't think they made that much of a difference.

Also, is the cot next to ur bed? My LO couldn't see out the side of his basket. But he can see me through the bars of the cot, and knows I'm there, just a thought, it might make it easier if he can see u.

My DD hated her cot, so we got a crib instead, it's a halfway house between Moses basket and cot in terms of size. She fell asleep in four minutes the first night I put her down in her crib, sleeping pattern has remained the same. I have put a bumper on it after seeing her look a bit confused and upset when one leg went through a gap. I know it is against SIDS advice but show me a Moses basket that doesn't have sides on it. Surely that is similar to a bumper? Anyhow it is a risk I am taking and I have to live with it. She sleeps right next to me in my room.

When my ds went into his cot his sleep went crazy as well, he got arms and legs caught in the bars etc. He was way too big for his Moses basket but seemed to miss the coziness of it. A midwife friend suggested we roll up towels and put two down the side and one curled round the top iykwim? Like in the shape of the basket, put them on the mattress then put a fitted sheet over the towels so they are underneath. Ds is now 6 months and still sleeps with them under his sheet. It made a huge difference to us.

Thanks for all the tips; we're going to try the cot again tonight. Fingers crossed!!!

Ps. Purrpurr that's a really good point (about the Moses basket being no different to a bumper).
