DD keeps getting nightmares

She is 2.9 years, and until a couple of months ago was perfect about sleeping. Now she is afraid of the snakes, crocodiles, monsters, bears lions even dolphins are 'coming to get her' and eat her up! She talks about this in the evenings, even though she knows they're 'only in stories' and mummy & daddy will look after her. She is very erratic about settling down, but not normally too bad, but waking up several times during the night, crying in her sleep, then getting out of bed.

We are coping (just) with putting her straight back to bed, but is there anything we can do to stop the nightmares in the first place. This evening she woke up crying, telling me that she had just seen The gruffalo!

She goes to a nursery, so we can't tell them to avoid all the possible problems, and how will she ever 'toughen up' if we just pander to her?
