I'm a first time mum do not really sure about this and need some advice please.

At what age should I start trying to get my DS into a bedtime routine? He is Mostly breast fed (1 bottle before bed) feeding about every 2 hours through the day. His current evening goes like this -

  1. 7pm bath
  2. Feed
  3. Settle and sleep on and off downstairs with me and DH but can be awake for a lot of that time until we go up about 10pm
  4. 10pm bottle and put into his Moses basket where he self settles and sleeps until approx 3/4am to start being breast fed every 2 hours
  5. Gets up for the day approx 8am

I want to start doing bath then feed then sleep in the Moses basket, only waking for feeds.

So my question is, at what age can I start doing this and he will actually be old enough to respond?

There is no "should". Babies and parents are all different. If you want to try and have a particular bedtime routine start trying and see if it works for your DS. Don't stress though if he doesn't settle into your ideal routine yet (or ever). Also, be aware he may do for a while and then suddenly it will change.

(keep in mind SIDS guidelines are that all sleep until 6 months is in the same room as you, so even if he settles in his moses basket early he should stay in the same room as you and/or your dh)

What he is doing in the evening is called 'cluster feeding'and its totally normal newborn behaviour I'm afraid!

From reading on here most babies do it to some extent for the first few months. I found I got more peace by just sitting with a baby on my knee till I went to bed myself.

If they were asleep I sometimes transferred them to DH's knee while I got ready for bed in peace. I also had a wee Moses basket thing in the living room to try and put then down in if there was a gap between feeds.

www.kellymom.com its a good site for info on what to expect.

Wow! You've got an amazing pattern there already if he's going from 10-3/4 at 9 weeks, out 14 week old had only been doing this for a week...and yep, cluster feeding is normal....

...as you are!

Thanks both.

And yes I fully intend in keeping my DS in our room until he is 6 months old.
